Debütantinnenball

seid meine Gäste

Be my guests

meine neuen Wollmeisen!

Already out and about in the wide wide world, but not even introduced properly:
my new Wollmeisen!

They are only just a week old, not even fully fledged, and already there are some knitters missing them on my site. And it's going to stay that way because these new Wollmeisen will only be accompanying us through summer in order to make place for some new colours in autumn.

Miss May:

First on the floor is Miss May with her somewhat shy nature. I fell in love spontaneously with the Floral Lace Anklets from the book "Lace Style" by Pam Allen and Ann Budd. Only a powdery old-fashioned colour can be paired up with this pattern. Delicate tones just like in May when lilacs and wisterias are blooming.

Mitternacht / Midnight:

Not knitted yet but dyed for a new special project. Knee-high socks! I absolutely want some knee-highs! The wish for these came to me in London, even though I would have been scrunching up my nose a few months before at the thought of having to wear long socks. The childhood memories were the culprits: Sloppy cuffs, pulling up the socks all the time and the 10-year-old know-it-all wanted her first nylons (didn't get any of course, thanks mum).

Johannisbeer und Brennessel / Red currant and stinging nettles:

"Johannisbeer und Brennnessel" or "Red Currant and Stinging Nettles" is a country beauty comparing to Miss May. Robust in character (sounds like a wine tasting) and not to be confused with the typical Christmas colours, the green in this one is too "stinging nettly" for that. My new colours didn't come to me as a complete concept, but purely intuitive, you'll notice that at the latest with "Bob". It feels weird knitting this! You have to know that I react extremely allergic to stinging nettle. While knitting these, I often get prickling sensation in my fingers. But don't worry, Nomen is not always Omen.

Salamander:

Salamander is a dark chapter in my soul. Pure mastering of the past of a cold windy London night in which we got lost in Canary Wharf. After we got out of it, there wasn't any grounds for negative thoughts. The Salamander is a nice Salamander with its small red dots and the flowing connection between black, khaki to yellow.

Bob:

Bob looks like nasturtium, but it's not one. Bob's birth was an outstandingly funny orange Bob-day with a lot of raggae music.

Kids beware! iPod can damage your hearing with too high a volume and will animate other people to laugh when you're singing out loud and incorrectly!

Versuchskaninchen / Guinea Pig:

Versuchskaninchen or Guinea Pig are the colours that don't really go on the same wavelength, not theirs and not mine. We usually just part amicably.

Versuchskanichen 1

Guinea Pig 1

Versuchskaninchen 2

Guinea Pig 2

Stimmt´s?

Don't you think? Guinea Pig 2 could have been a member of the House Romanov: Tsar green and Tsar red.

So there they are! Still being lead shyly up the long stairs and on to the red carpet.

London

My title could have been "Miles deep under the ground", "LOOPS", "Lost in V&A" or "Stitch and Craft". London is however more than that. It's hot and spicy, multi-culti, very British, when you are served a cappuccino by a pale waiter at Harrod's (or maybe not) and when you get friendly and attentive helps as an uninformed tourist (even though you destroyed your multiple-days ticket).

It is actually impossible to give you all the impressions of a long weekend. Nobody would probably want to know about the perfidies of the standard shower in the Ibis Hotel and at the same time to take this advice for 15 minutes of relaxation.

To hear the stories of smouldering socks, nightly disorientated aberration in the land of the docks or about the daily cash check: "I'm going to spend some money". And because of that, I rather write about exciting places that us girls (Dani and Maria) visited.

LOOPS: www.loop.gb.com in Islington, einem sehr netten Stadtteil

LOOPS: www.loop.gb.com in Islington, a very nice suburb.

Behind the entrance of Loops, donned with pom-poms, you can find:

A rather small selection of what a wooly heart longs for, but in lieu of that you get a lot of fun ideas on what you can do with wool. This was demonstrated by a very nice manly man who explained his newest knitting project to us and even took his shoes off for me and went into a ballet position, however without the grand-plié.

dear Mr. it was very nice to meet you

The Loops display was a work of art; the most beautiful Easter decoration that I have ever seen. Unfortunately, the windows - cleaned to such perfection - wouldn't let me take any useable pictures. I managed to make 3 of them show up to some degrees.

Besticktes Zeitungskleid

Sewn gown out of newspapers

After the Lufthansa bun several hours beforehand, we were hungry - really hungry.

Victoria & Albert Museum:

Victoria & Albert Museum:

A section = 1 day. You should know about this and just head straight to room 100-101. Straight through the museum shop where I found the funny clothes-pegs:

just turn right and go through the hall until the stairwell. On the first floor, and don't get distracted by the ginormously huge library, keep going right through the dark corridor and enter the even darker hall on the left.

There they are, the solid wood cabinet filled with needle works that require the time to collect. Gently, one can pull out one of the brass handles to bring out...

...solche Herrlichkeiten.

...such delights. A room further there are century old Asian textiles as well as a corner to try on Kimonos. There was only one left for a guy. No picture. The Obi (which is a kind of belt...nothing to do with Star Wars or a DIY shop for those in Germany) is worn below the stomach...and is pretty much unflattering.

"stitch and craft" Show im Olympia in Kensington:

"Stitch and Craft" Show in Olympia in Kensington:

There is a small branch connexion off from the District Line going over Earls Court that goes to the Olympic Grounds. It feels almost like "Winkelgasse". Just don't be annoyed by the bomb alarm and just follow the women that want to go in the same direction. When I saw the big old Victorian building, I was elated...for nothing, since the destination was actually a newer construction around the corner. Shopping carts are offered in the foyer and some fantastic and monumental securities would control our tickets.

Wo waren Colinette, Rowan und all die Großen geblieben? Daheim!

Where were Colinette, Rowan and all the big names? At home! There was a lot of knitting stalls but I don't knit that much. There were just as many scrap-booking stalls and I was confronted with this kind of hobby for the first time. However, we found the small "jewels" nevertheless:

At a small stall of the Royal School of Needlework, Owen Davies & Gill Holdsworth presented their works and an extraordinary book. Knitted, embroidered, tatted...miniature gardens imitating the examples of the formal classical English gardens. I love garden architecture, I love plants, I love textile works but I would never have dreamt of combining them all together. Imitation of stone walls with wisteria hanging off it; even the water lilies in the pond were distinguishable; not to mention the very real looking upholstered stone pavement. What an adorable work of detail!

I could have spent hours digging around in the baskets full of buttons over at www.buttoncompany.co.uk. It feels as though you were looking for precious stones: Dig deep and you will find a diamond!

I decided on a pouch full of "emeralds" and a mother-of-pearl kit for a necklace. The two big green ones were my diamonds.

I find Tess's stall pretty special:

Tess and her husband, from www.silkwoodyarns.co.uk, breed angora rabbits, dye wools with a lot of colour sense, sell also hand-spun wool and take care of their business with a lot of love. We talked for a long while and exchanged our experiences in the business. What a nice pair. It's a shame that the UK is a tad too far.

Unfortunately, I didn't take any wool back with me. The reason being:

Weichei? Feige Socke?

The presence of the Knitting Maestro Kaffe Fassett standing directly on the opposite side disturbed me and it made me turn red like a school girl. I couldn't form any words on my lips apart from some croaking and so I just let it be and slipped away like a cat around a hot plate. What would you call such an act? Softy? Coward?

That was my/our time in London! And what do you think, are we goinng back there soon?
